Here the cabinet has been stripped, filled, stained, sanded and toning
lacquer has been applied. The stains were made from a mixture of brown,
black and maroon shoe dyes.
The bottom molding, the molding between the top of the radio and the bottom
of the bar, and the edge of the mirror lid were toned with Van Dyke Brown, as
were the front vertical corners of the cabinet. Cherry Brown was used on the
rest of the cabinet. The lacquer was rubbed down with 0000 steal wool between
every other coat. After obtaining the desired toning, several coats of
semi-gloss lacquer were applied for the final finish with a final rub down
with steal wool. The scanned pictures do not do it justice, as it finished
out really quite nice.
